 Who I am and What I do

I was born in Cametá, a small town in the state of Pará, Brazil, on February 23, 1935. My family moved in 1944 for Abaetetuba, other small town of the same state, and in 1952 when doing the military service was transferred to Rio de Janeiro.
In the present time I am professor of Mechanical Engineering im my country, very much interested in exchange educational experience with other educators in such field of engineering in the world.
More specifically, I am professor at Departmente of Mechanical Engineering of the UNIVERSIDADE SANTA ÚRSULA, a traditional education Catholic institution in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
My primary studies were made in Grupo Escolar Dom Romualdo de Seixas at Cametá and Grupo Escolar de Abaetetuba, and my High School in the Colegio Dom Pedro II, and Colegio do Instituto Rossio, both in Rio de Janeiro.
I am graduate in Physics from 1963, by Universidade do Estado da Guanabara, current Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro, and graduate Mechanical Engineer from 1965, by Escola de Engenharia da Universidade Federal Fluminense, both in Brazil. My post gradute were made in Mechanical Engineering, 1975, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, and Geophysics, 1978, Instituto de Geociências da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.
All my studies, starting from the high school, they were financed by the wage that I won when made the military service in Corpo de Fuzileiros Navais (Brazilian Marines Corp). Never received any aids of who wants that is for my study. I am a man that was educated and formed by myself. I am a self made man. Since 16 years of age all actions of my life, right or wrong, they were of my responsability.
My professional experience: I went teacher in numerous secondary schools in Rio de janeiro, citation for COLÉGIO ANDRÉ MAUROIS, COLÉGIO AMARO CAVALCANTI, ESCOLA ESTADUAL MÉXICO, UNIDADE INTEGRADA REVERENDO ÁLVARO REIS, COLÉGIO PEDRO ÁLVARES CABRAL, COLÉGIO DILERMANDO CRUZ, COLÉGIO MANUEL BANDEIRA,and ESCOLA TÉCNICA VISCONDE DE MAUÁ. In all secondary school now I am retired.
In Universities I was professor in the ESCOLA DE ENGENHARIA DA UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO RIO DE JANEIRO (from 1964 to 1966), Professor Lecture in the INSTITUTO MILITAR DE ENGENHARIA (1966), and Professor of the INSTITUTO DE FÍSICA DA UNIVERSIDADE FEDERAL DO RIO DE JANEIRO (from 1968 to 1978),where I taught physics and I began a series of experiments with lasers and mechanical vibrations. In the present time I am Professor of Mechanical Engineering at DEPARTAMENTO DE ENGENHARIA MECÃNICA DA UNIVERSIDADE SANTA ÚRSULA and head of the same department.
My experience as mechanical engineer I may citation that I work throughout in several organizations im my country, as PANAIR DO BRASIL, DIRETORIA DE ENGENHARIA DA MARINHA, BRASILIA OBRAS PÚBLICAS, and BKM ENGENHARIA, actively engaged in design, mechanical constructions, industrial instalations, management, consulting in small firms, and government departments.
I am a continuos scholar. The areas of my intereste are: mechanisms, aplied mechanics, dynamics of machinery, machine design, materiaials handling, robotics, and NC machines tool.
My hobbies: model planes, walk on foot, music, literature, travels, and TV Discovery Channel.
My favorite magazines: Scientific American, Science, New Scientist, Nature, Engineering News Record, American Machinist, Reader´s Digest, Galileu, Ciência Hoje, and Superinteressante.
My favorite newspapers are: NY Herald Tribune, New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Le Figaro, Folhs de São Paulo, and O Globo.
I am married since 1970. The name of my wife is Maria Thereza, a wonderful woman. I and my wife are Catholics.

CONSIDERATIONS ON MECHANICAL ENGINEERING

Mechanical Engineering is based on sciences of mathematics, and physics principally. The motion of machine members is goal of study of mechanical engineer, for exemple. On the other side, really, mechanical engineering is a large field finding application in virtually all industries and manufactured products.
The mechanical engineer applies principles of mechanics, dynamics, and energy transfer to the design, analysis, testing, and manufacutre consumer and industrial products too. A mechanical engineer usually has specialized knowledge in areas such as thermodynamics, control systems, materials, fluid dynamics, manufacturing methods, environment problems, and human factors.
As applications of mechanical engineering aim design of machines used in the manufacturing and processing industries, mechanical components of electronic and computers, components and vehicles for land, sea, air, and space, and artificial components for human body.
Mechanical engineers work throughout the engineering community as individual consultants in small firms providing specialized products or services, in engineering and management in large corporation, and government agencies. A mechanical engineer with spacialization in power systems and thermal design is concerned with energy utilization and thernal environment control (engines, turbines, power plants) and their components is a major activity.
Thermal environment control requires the design of thermal control systems having heat eschange, heat pumps, heat pipes, and ablation heat shields.
Cryogenics, vacuum thecnology, and solar thermal energy are ither areas in which a mechanical engineer contributes too.
The program in Mechanical Engineering at university that I am professor, UNIVERSIDADE SANTA ÚRSULA, provides excellent prepation for a carrer in mechanical engineering and a foundation for advanced graduate studies (MSc, DSc, and PhD) in one specialized fields of mechanical engineering at the forefront of thecnology.
At UNIVERSIDADE SANTA ÚRSULA, there are an environment for continuous learning, experimentation, professional, systemic, and personal change. It represents comprehensive model for educational leadership, learning, inovation, and institutional transformation.
